Agri-Business FAQs
What liability limit should I have on the policy?
No less than $1,000,000 per occurrence. You should review your exposures with us to determine a limit based on your business/situation.
Are my farm supplies (feed, hay, straw, grain, etc.), farm equipment, and/or livestock insured under my farmowners policy?
Not automatically. You choose whether to insure these types of items and the amount of coverage for each. We will have the insurance company list them on the farmowners policy.
I have livestock but not a full farm. My house is a residential property or a gentleman’s farm. Am I required to have a farmowners policy instead of a homeowners policy? Am I required to have a farmowners policy instead of a homeowners policy?
Not always. Some homeowner policies may be endorsed to cover farm-type exposures. We can work with you to obtain the proper coverage for your unique situation.
How often should I adjust the coverage on my farm buildings, farm equipment, farm supplies, and/or livestock?
An annual review is recommended to ensure you have included/removed any items you may have recently purchased or no longer have. Building values can also fluctuate, so it’s good practice to review them every year.
I have extra space in my farm building / on my land, so I want to rent space for others to store items on my property. Is that covered by my farmowners policy?
It may be covered, but only if the insurance company approves it. In some cases, the insurance company may add an endorsement for the additional exposure.
In most cases, your policy will not cover damage to the item(s) stored on your property.
What deductible should I choose?
Most insurance companies set the minimum deductible at $1,000, while the average policy deductible is closer to $2,500. It is best to evaluate your risk and work with us to determine the deductible that is best for your situation.
My vehicles are registered as farm vehicles or are “registration-exempt.” Can I insure them in my farmowners policy, or do I need an auto policy?
Farm registered and registration-exempt farm vehicles may be insured on your farmowners policy. Notify us to add them to your policy.
I have off-road utility vehicles (ATV/UTV/Gators/Golf Cart/etc) that I use for farming operations and to cross the road to access my other properties. Am I covered when I drive utility vehicles on the road or property I do not own?
The answer is likely “no.” Most insurance companies require an endorsement to cover the exposure for utility vehicles.
Check with your state’s Department of Transportation for guidelines for driving these types of vehicles on public roads.
I have a farm stand where I sell fresh produce and products. Is it covered under my farmowners policy?
Possibly, but it’s best to contact us to make sure it’s covered. In most cases, selling eggs and produce is covered. Meat sales at a farm stand are usually not covered.
Some of the agricultural buildings on my property are old. Am I required to insure them on my policy?
No. You may choose which buildings to insure. If the buildings are deteriorating and are a safety hazard, they should be removed to avoid injuries and liability claims.
